Director of Philanthropy
OUR PURPOSE
Through relationships, the Community Foundation of Boone County brings people, philanthropy, and purpose together to strengthen our community. We believe real impact starts locally by listening, building trust, and working alongside donors, partners, and nonprofits to invest in people and address needs right here at home. With more than $41 million in net assets, CFBC stewards permanent charitable funds to create lasting, generational impact, awarding more than $31 million in scholarships and grants since 1991. We lead with care, connection, and thoughtful stewardship – focused not just on what we do today, but on the community we’re building for the future.
JOB SUMMARY
The Director of Philanthropy reports to the Chief Executive Officer and plays a central role in shaping CFBC’s fundraising success and donor experience. This full-time position works in a highly collaborative and integrated manner with CFBC staff, Board members, and Donor Development committee members to advance a comprehensive, relationship-driven philanthropy strategy grounded in trust, collaboration, and a shared commitment to community impact.
At the heart of this role is connection and leadership in fundraising strategy. The Director is a generalist fundraiser who builds and stewards authentic relationships with donors, fund advisors, and community partners across all backgrounds and generations, providing concierge-level service that honors each donor’s personal philanthropic journey. By thoughtfully aligning donors’ passions with meaningful community needs and educating them on effective, tax-advantaged ways to give, this role helps individuals expand their giving, deepen their impact, and shape both current and legacy goals.
The Director leads a broad portfolio of fundraising efforts – including individual giving, major gifts, fund development, corporate partnerships, campaigns, and events – while upholding the highest standards of care, trust, and stewardship. This role is ideal for someone who is both relational and strategic – energized by building programs over time, making the case for philanthropy, sequencing priorities, and executing with intention and care. The ideal candidate thrives on human connection, is adaptable and collaborative, and is motivated by purpose, progress, and the long view of impact – not transactions.
Job Responsibilities
Donor & Fund Advisor Relationships
Build and maintain meaningful, trust-based relationships with donors and fund advisors by deeply understanding their passions, values, and philanthropic goals. Serve as a connector by helping donors see how their generosity aligns with community needs and CFBC’s strategic priorities. Meet donors where they are, from emerging philanthropists to legacy-minded individuals and families.
Fundraising Strategy & Execution
Plan, build, and execute a diversified fundraising strategy that includes annual giving, major gifts, fund development, sponsorships, and campaigns. Work closely with the CEO to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward gifts that advance CFBC’s mission and long-term sustainability.
Serve as a key driver in developing CFBC’s giving programs, including planned giving and tax-advantaged strategies such as Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs), gifts of appreciated assets, stock, and other non-cash contributions. Educate donors on the benefits of different giving vehicles and position CFBC as a trusted local partner – and preferred option – for donor advised funds and long-term charitable planning.
Manage a portfolio of donors and prospects while helping shape the systems, materials, messaging, and processes needed to support each fundraising pillar over time.
Donor Stewardship & Experience
Champion a culture of exceptional donor stewardship across the organization. Build and maintain meaningful, trust-based relationships with donors and fund advisors by deeply understanding their passions, values, and philanthropic goals. Communications & Storytelling Collaboration
Work closely with the Director of Communications to align fundraising messaging, donor communications, timelines, and brand identity. Collaborate on donor-facing materials including newsletters, annual reports, appeals, mailings, and impact updates to ensure accuracy, clarity, and a donor-centered approach. Support donor recognition and high-touch communications for major and leadership-level donors.
Community Connection & Outreach
Represent CFBC throughout Boone County by attending community events, hosting meetings, and engaging individuals and groups of all ages and interests. Build relationships that expand awareness of CFBC and invite participation in philanthropy in accessible and inspiring ways.
Board & Volunteer Engagement
Partner with the CEO to engage Board members and volunteers in fundraising and donor stewardship efforts. Provide tools, guidance, and support to help ambassadors confidently share CFBC’s mission and impact.
Data, Tracking & Continuous Improvement
Track fundraising activity, donor engagement, and stewardship efforts to inform strategy and measure progress. Use insight, feedback, and long-term vision to sequence priorities, refine fundraising approaches, and strengthen outcomes over time, recognizing that building sustainable philanthropy is a multi-year effort.
Additional Responsibilities
Support fundraising events and campaigns as needed, including planning, logistics, and donor engagement. Other program-related duties associated with the Foundation’s initiatives and community leadership work.
