WOMEN OF IMPACT GRANTEE REPORT: mental health of America in boone county
Our Women of Impact Boone County group voted Mental Health America in Boone County (MHABC) as the 2018 fourth quarter grantee. The grant of $14,400 had a MAJOR impact over the past year.
The grant funds supplemented needs for domestic violence survivors in the MHABC program, including job training, hygiene, transportation costs, food & paper goods, therapy, support group programming, and whole health needs such as exercise, wellness, and hobbies. This program helps survivors reach beyond just getting by and truly helps them and their family to heal as whole people, to gain their individuality, independence, and confidence back, and to start feeling human again.
Receiving the Women of Impact grant also resulted in increased awareness of the programs offered at MHABC. Attendance was higher for the 2019 annual fundraiser, private donations increased, and they had enough families/groups to ‘adopt’ domestic violence survivors for Christmas.
Pascal Fettig, President and CEO for Mental Health America in Boone County, told us: “We are extremely thankful to the Women of Impact Boone County members for the funds and the difference they made in the lives of so many women and children trying to get their independence back. The awareness the funds brought to our domestic violence program for the community at large is key, which will further our ability to reach out to future survivors in need, as well as pursue new channels of funding.”
Our friends at MHABC are truly making a difference right here in Boone County. One domestic violence survivor who received assistance from MHABC shared: “The staff at Mental Health America in Boone County have been invaluable in keeping me and my kids feeling safe and healthy since we escaped our domestic violence situation. I didn’t know what to do or where to start. I was anxious, scared, and overwhelmed. I honestly don’t know where we’d be right now without their support and services.”
Since 2017, the Women of Impact Boone County philanthropic group has granted over $138,000 to twelve Boone County nonprofit organizations. The group is designed to provide financial support for local nonprofit organizations while creating a sense of community. Members meet quarterly for 90 minutes for social time, nominating eligible nonprofits, hearing the selected nonprofits speak, then voting a nonprofit to be the grantee and receive the collective funds. Membership is open year-round. Click here to learn more about the group and how you and your friends can join.
