During the fall, the Community Arts Endowment presents the Arts, Music and Theatre Creativity Mini Art Grants with support from the Back to the Fifties Festival. Union Elementary School in Zionsville was a recipient of the Mini Art Grant award. Union Elementary used the grant to purchase a C Sub Contra Bass Bar.
Purchasing the C Sub Contra Bass Bar has allowed students to increase their awareness of rhythm and harmony. Studies have shown that students are more accurately able to respond to the rhythm changes when the pitch is low. Furthermore, this purchase has allowed Union Elementary to target three National Standards for Music Education
The students have enjoyed using the C Sub Contra Bass Bar, which they have nicked named “Big C.” Here is how “Big C” has impacted the students’ and their music in their own words:
- “Big C helps me keep the beat because I can hear it while I am playing.”
- “I feel like a rock star when we use Big C.”
- “This kinda sounds like when my high school brother turns up the stereo in his car…but not so loud!”
- “I can’t wait until we get some more bass…because it’s all about that bass, about that bass” (reference to a popular pop song)
There is no doubt that Big C has been a great addition to the students’ music education and we are happy to contribute to their educational experience.
