In June 2022, members of the Women of Impact (WoI) philanthropic giving group brought their passion to support local nonprofits together and voted Special Olympics Boone County as the 2022 second quarter grantee.

Special Olympics Boone County (SOBC) provides year-round sports, leadership, & fitness programs for Boone County children & adults ages 8+ with intellectual disabilities. SOBC is an area program of Special Olympics Indiana, so they raise all funds required to offer sports & services to local athletes.

“Because of Special Olympics, children and adults with intellectual disabilities are putting on team uniforms and actively participating in sports competitions”, said Terri Noffke, SOBC County Coordinator. “They win sometimes, lose sometimes, and play by the Special Olympics athletes oath: Let me win. But, if I cannot win, let me brave in the attempt.”

Special Olympics Boone County never charges athletes to participate. Registration, participation, uniforms, sports equipment, facility rentals, and entry fees are all free to the athletes and their families. There are no paid positions. All management, coaches, chaperones, and partners are volunteers.

They offer sports year round for all ability levels, such as track & field, equestrian, swimming, cheerleading, basketball, bowling, and more!

You can support Special Olympics Boone County by donating these items anytime to them:

  • Basketball: Balls, whistles, ball bags, shirts, transportation for athletes
  • Track: Starting guns, shirts, transportation for athletes
  • Cycling: Shirts, transporting bikes to & from practice
  • Corn hole: Shirts & new corn hole boards within the next few years
  • Bowling: Monetary donations as this is the most expensive sport for SOBC due to the # of participants and the cost to run the program
