The Community Foundation of Boone County granted over 72 scholarships and awards valued at over $343,000 the spring of 2007. In this issue, the scholars and their awards are introduced.

Lilly Endowment Community Scholarships

Rachel Schluttenhofer and Megan Tait were awarded the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship this spring out of 42 applicants from Boone County. Rachel, daughter of Mike and Roberta Schluttenhofer, will be majoring in biochemistry at Purdue University. Megan, daughter of Charles and Jennifer Tait, will major in English Education at Indiana Wesleyan University. Each student will receive full tuition, required fees and a special allocation of up to $800 per year for required books and equipment for four years of undergraduate studies. These two scholarships combined are valued at over $112,000.

The other finalists for the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship were: from Lebanon High School, Chris Shaw, son of Rick and Lynn Shaw, and Jennifer Behrens, daughter of David and Sally Behrens; from Western Boone, Kerri Richardson, daughter of Doug and Elizabeth Richardson, and Laura Lawson, daughter of Jane Lawson, from Zionsville High School Ben Scott, son of Shawn McKee Scott, Sarah Henegan, daughter of Mike and Lorie Heneghan, and Seth Einterz, son of Robert and Lea Anne Einterz. All nine students interviewed were exceptional.

American Legion Post 79-Jack Clark Scholarship

Ben Scott, son of Shawn McKee Scott, and Aurelia Wuelfing, daughter of Donna King and Curt Wuelfing were this year's recipients. Ben graduated from Zionsville Community High School while Aurelia is a graduate of Lebanon High School. Ben will major in finance at Indiana University; while Aurelia is pursuing a degree in psychology at Purdue. The Legion chose the students for their commitment to their communities. This scholarship was established with proceeds from the sale of property that was left by Jack Clark to Post 79 of the American Legion in Zionsville.

Boone County Agriculture Scholarship: High School

Rachel Hiestin, daughter of Robert and Cindy Hieston, was the recipient of this scholarship. She has been actively involved in FFA and was a ten year 4-H member. She will major in ag transfer at Joliet Junior College in Joliet, Illinois. The citizens of Boone County established this scholarship for students who are interested in agriculture or related fields.

Boone County Agriculture Scholarship: College Student

Kasey Miller, daughter of Kevyn and Rene' Miller, and Ashley Fussell, daughter of Rhonda Fussell were the recipients of this agriculture scholarship. Kasey is currently attending Texas A & M and studying agricultural leadership and development with a minor in music performance. Ashley is attending Purdue and studying biochemistry. This scholarship was established by the citizens of Boone County for students who were already attending college who are in the agricultural or related fields.

Tom Bauman Memorial Scholarship

Ben Scott, son of Shawn McKee Scott, received this scholarship. He made a significant contribution to the Zionsville Community High School's athletic program through all four years of high school. He was a three sport athlete: cross country, swimming and track. Ben plans on continuing his education at Indiana University to pursue majors in finance. This scholarship was established in memory of Tom Bauman who excelled in all aspects of his life prior to his untimely death in 1986. He was a 1981 graduate of Zionsville who made a major contribution to athletics.

Ben Brimmer Arts Scholarship

This scholarship is given to a student from Zionsville Community High School who will be studying art in college or at a vocational school, and who has been employed in the Zionsville area. Brian Schmutzler, a 2000 Zionsville graduate, helped to establish this fund in memory of his friend, Ben Brimmer.

Buren Fund Scholarship of the William Higgins Trust

Wade Thatcher, son of John Thatcher and Marie Lininger, graduate of Lebanon High School and Daniel Pierce, son of Danny and Lisa Pierce, graduate of Western Boone Jr. Sr. High School and Benjamin Scott, son of Shawn McKee Scott, graduate of Zionsville Community High School were recipients of this award. Ball State University is the school of choice for Wade to pursue a degree in technology education. Daniel Pierce plans to obtain an oncology radiation degree from Indiana University; while Ben Scott will also study at IU but major in finance. William Higgins established this scholarship through a trust. It is named in memory of his son, Buren, to aid worthy young men in pursuing a college education.

Jim & Frances Capps Scholarship

Brooke Dalton, daughter of Cecilia Howell, was this year's recipient of the Capps scholarship. She will attend Angelo State University in San Angelo, Texas and study animal science towards a career as a veterinarian. The Capps scholarship is given to a qualified student of Brownwood High School in Brownwood, Texas, who is deserving of financial assistance and who is likely to succeed as a college or university or vocational/technical student. John and Charlene Roth established the scholarship fund in memory of Charlene's parents.

James Holman Carr & Pauline Neel Carr Scholarship

Cody Broshar, son of Gary Broshar and Patty Will, was the recipient of this scholarship. He will attend Purdue and major in business. The student chosen of this county-wide award must attend Purdue University, have financial need, and have demonstrated leadership skills though involvement in extracurricular activities. The scholarship was established by Joseph K. and Charlotte Tyre, long time residents of Boone County, in memory of Charlotte's parents, James Holman Carr and Pauline Neel Carr. The Carrs exemplified the American farm life dedicated to agriculture and were innovators within their community.

Norma & Ed Castetter Memorial Endowment

Daniel Pierce, a recent graduate of Western Boone, won this award. He is the son of Danny and Lisa Pierce. Dan was nominated by his principal as a student who exhibits characteristics of Edward Castetter which is a positive attitude, dedicated, preserving, pride and leadership. He will attend IU this fall and study radiation oncology. The award was established in memory and honor of Edward K. Castetter who attended Thorntown High School. He played a very active leadership role in the community, serving as a board member of Witham Hospital Foundation, a member of the Thorntown Lions Club, a member of Boone County Leadership, and a Trustee for Boone County.

Aaron & Cathy Coates Vocal Music Scholarship

Matt Starkey, son of Kevin and Laura Starkey, was the recipient of this award. He was a member of the ZCHS vocal music program for all four years of high school as a participant first in the men's cadet choir and then in Royalaires for three years. He will study at Ivy Tech Community College. This scholarship was established by the Zionsville Community High School show choir parents' organizations: Royalaires and Choralaires.

The Richard H. Crosser Memorial Scholarship Fund

Chase Barnett, son of Terry and Susan Barnett, received this award. He will be attending Purdue University and is majoring in building construction management. This scholarship, named in memory of Crossmann Communities past President Richard Crosser, was established with funds from the home building business of Crossmann Communities, now Beazer Homes, for students from Lebanon High School. Recipients of the award must major in structural engineering, architecture, building trades, drafting, business, finance, accounting, real estate, or other field related to building trades.

The Entrepreneur Scholarship Fund — in Honor of Lloyd & Jane Taylor

Charles "Austin" Curtis, son of Chuck and Cheryl Curtis, plans to pursue a degree in business management or international business at Purdue. He has already exhibited entrepreneurship skills by running his own lawn care and landscaping business. Jeff and Benita Thomasson established this scholarship. Jeff was a former Zionsville resident and graduate of Zionsville Community High School. As a high school student, Jeff worked for Mr. Taylor at Taylor Oil in Zionsville and credits Lloyd Taylor with encouraging him to pursue his education and business goals. He wanted to honor this couple who had positively influenced his young life, and he started this scholarship fund in their honor.

Family Music Studio Scholarship

Kristin O'Connell, daughter of Paul and Teresa O'Connell, is the recipient of this scholarship. She will be attending Roosevelt University in Chicago, Illinois and will pursue a degree in musical theatre. Kristin has performed as a soloist for many community events and has participated in a number of theatre productions. Barbara Walters, owner of Family Music Studio, established this scholarship to celebrate her 30th year of teaching violin, viola, cello and piano in a private studio setting. The recipient chosen has been dedicated to an active musical life and has a commitment to serving the community musically.

Homer and Gwendolen Fix Memorial Scholarship

Andrew Neita, son of Cathy Overley and Dan Neita; Courtney Deist, daughter of Jim and Nancy Deist, and John "Jack" Haines, son of Jim and Julie Haines were the recipients of this award. Both Andrew and Courtney will pursue their degrees at Purdue University; while Jack will study at Anderson University. All three have participated in the athletic programs of Zionsville Middle School, and Zionsville Community High School. Andrew played football and ran track. Courtney also ran track but competed too in soccer and cross country. Jack played lacrosse, tennis, volleyball and ran cross country. Each spring a euchre tournament is held to raise funds for the scholarship, which was established by Sam Fix in memory of his parents Homer and Gwendolen. Sam retired in 1994 from Zionsville Community High School where he served as a teacher, coach and athletic director.

Todd Getty Mental Attitude Memorial Scholarship

Alex Ismail, son of Richard and Betsy Ismail, was chosen to receive this award by the varsity head coaches, principal and athletic director of Zionsville Community High School. He was a leader in swimming. International studies will be his major at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Alex was an athlete who possessed a cheerful, positive attitude, strong work ethic, and good sportsmanship and was a friend to all, which were characteristics of Todd. Todd W. Getty was a junior at Zionsville High School when his friends and family established this fund in his memory.

Thomas E. Gruhl Scholarship Fund

Benjamin Thacker, son of Mark and Lisa Thacker, Sarah Hypes, daughter of Rick and Rita Hypes and Kelly Myers, daughter of Terry and LuAnn Myers, were each a recipient of this scholarship. Ben will continue his studies this fall at Cedarville University with cross cultural ministries major. Sarah will be continuing at Ball State University with a major in nursing; while Kelly will continue at Indiana University to complete her degree in secondary education specializing in mathematics. The Board of Directors of Mid State Bank, now National City, established this educational scholarship fund in honor of the retirement of Tom Gruhl as bank president in March 1993. This award is made annually to a Boone County resident, enrolled or graduated from Zionsville Community High School or a contract teacher or administrator employed by Zionsville School Corporation. A student recipient must be enrolled and accepted for post high school education or training at an accredited institution with preference given to students attending Franklin College. For a school staff recipient, awards include seminar/workshop/conference enrollment and attendance.

Florence Gruver Memorial Scholarship

Johanna Seppel, daughter of Karynn & Paul Seppel, was awarded this scholarship designed for students who are pursuing careers in teaching. Johanna plans to study at Ball State University and major in education. Robert V. Copeland established this annual, renewable scholarship in memory of his friend, Florence Gruver, who died in 1994, and who had been a teacher and a fine and true lady.

Arthur & Nancy Hansen Scholarship Award for Science & Mathematics

Sarah Ellis senior, daughter of Patricia Cavazzoni and Jack Ellis; Katie Deeg, junior, daughter of Susan Deeg and Mark Deeg; Chris Mattson, sophomore, son of Dave and Terri Mattson and Lee-Wei Kao, freshman, son of Chinghai Kao and Meei-Huey Jeng were the students chosen to receive this award. Sarah will be attending the University of Toronto and major in international relations and economics. Dr. Arthur Hansen established this award, which is given yearly to one student in each grade attending Zionsville Community High School for their excellence in science and mathematics.

Higgins Scholarship

This is one of two scholarships established by the late Mabel and Eugene Higgins and is not available every year. To be eligible for the Higgins Scholarship a student must be a Boone County resident who attends an Indiana college to study agriculture, home economics or pre-medicine. Mabel had a love of education and had been a math teacher in Knightstown and Greenfield. She and her husband also farmed in the Lebanon community for forty years. Mabel served her community as a member of the Board of Directors for the Citizens Bank & Trust Company. Memberships included the United Methodist Church in Franklin; and in Lebanon the Cooking Club, Psi Iota Xi Auxiliary, and Ulen Country Club.

Theodore Husting Morden, D.P.M. Wresting Scholarship

Graham Youngs, son of Tim and Cathy Youngs, is the recipient of the scholarship. He will attend Wabash College and study history/pre-law. To receive this award, the recipient must have wrestled a minimum of three years in high school and maintained a 3.0 out of 4.0 GPA. Graham was sectional, regional, semi-state wrestling champion and 4th in the state. This scholarship was established by Robert M. Palmer, M.D., Institute of Biomechanics, Inc. to honor Dr. Ted Morden, who also was a wrestler. Dr. Morden feels wrestling was very important in his life and taught himself confidence, punctuality, self reliance and to be physically fit.

Charles "Pete" Paddock Scholarship

John "Jack" Haines, son of Jim and Julie Haines, and Benjamin Scott, son of Shawn McKee Scott are recipients of this scholarship. Jack will study pre-optometry at Anderson University while IU is the school of choice for Ben where he will be plans to major in finance. This scholarship was established by friends and family in memory of Pete Paddock who was at teacher and administrator in the Zionsville Schools for 38 years. The athlete chosen exemplified the positive spirit of Mr. Paddock. The qualities include: strength of character, integrity, attitude, work ethic, community involvement, and sportsmanship.

Darrell A. Portell 4-H Memorial Scholarship

Wade Thatcher, son of Marie Lininger and John Thatcher, received this award. Ball State is Wade's choice for college to pursue a career in technology education. He is a ten year member of 4-H, club president for four years, active in junior leaders and served on the fair board and 4-H council. Recipients of this award must have been active in 4-H for the last three years of eligibility and possess good leadership skills. Barbara Portell established this scholarship in memory of her late husband Darrell A. Portell who was a very active 4-H volunteer.

Pratt Family Fund Scholarship

Sarah Heneghan, daughter of Mike and Lorie Heneghan, is this year's scholarship recipient. She will be studying biology/pre-dentistry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in Oxford, Ohio. The scholarship is awarded to a senior girl at Zionsville Community High School who has shown the highest degree of leadership and initiative in scholarship and athletics. The recipient too must have received a varsity letter in at least two sports. Bing and Suzi Pratt to honor their daughters, Kara and Lisa established this scholarship.

Psi Iota Xi-Omega Chapter Malpas Scholarship

Kristin O'Connell, daughter of Paul and Teresa O'Connell received this award. She will major in musical theatre at Roosevelt University in Chicago, Illinois. This scholarship was established by Mr. Malpas to be awarded by Psi Iota Xi, Omega Chapter to a graduating female from Lebanon High School. It is preferred, but not mandatory, that applicants major in art, literature, music, or speech and hearing.

Harold and Evelyn Rice Scholarship

This scholarship is for a young man who is an active member of the Dover Christian Church and is enrolled in a Christian Bible College for the purpose of preparing for ministry. Morris D. and Patricia Ramsey established this fund in honor of her parents Harold and Evelyn Rice. The Rices were very involved in the Dover Christian Church as long-time Sunday school teachers. Harold was also an elder of the church and Evelyn was active in the Ladies Aid program.

Ms. Dorothy Roby & Yolanda Cox Memorial Scholarship

Kelly Thompson, daughter of Gary and Vicki Thompson, was this years' recipient. She will major in elementary education at Indiana University. Friends and former students of Ms. Roby established this scholarship in her memory. She was a teacher for more than 60 years, teaching English and Latin at the high school and the PAGE (gifted) program at Pleasant View Elementary School. Upon the passing of Yolanda Cox, additional contributions were made to this scholarship in her memory. She too was an educator and served as a teacher and guidance counselor for thirty seven years at Zionsville Community High School. Both Ms. Roby and Mrs. Cox made a significant impact in the lives of many students.

John Whitney Roth III Memorial Scholarship

Megan McDaniel, daughter of Scott and Carrie McDaniel, is the first recipient of this scholarship. She is a nursing major at the University of Southern Indiana in Evansville. Friends and family of John Whitney Roth III, upon his passing as a result of injuries suffered in an automobile accident in 2006, established this scholarship. John was a 2004 graduate of Zionsville High School who touched the lives of everyone he met with his smile, his heart, his zest for life, and his passion for golf and music. The student chosen to receive this scholarship must attend the University of Southern Indiana in Evansville and be a graduate of Zionsville Community High School.

Thomas G. Slama Scholarship Fund

Monica DeProspero, daughter of Michael and Christina DeProspero, is the recipient of this scholarship for students who are pursuing medical studies. She will be attending Purdue University to major in pharmacy. Dr. Slama established this fund to help students who plan to study medical science and who need financial assistance. He wanted to do something for the community and its schools in acknowledgment of the many benefits he and his children had received.

State Bank of Lizton Community Bankers Scholarship

Emily Kramer, Danielle Searles and Sarah Heneghan were the Boone County residents who were the recipients of this renewable scholarship. Emily, daughter of Phil Kramer and Theresa Kramer, is a graduate of Western Boone. Danielle, daughter of Doug and MaryBeth Searles, graduated from Lebanon High School. Sarah graduate of Zionsville High School is the daughter of Mike and Lorie Heneghan. Emily will major in Spanish education at Taylor University and Danielle will attend Purdue to study pharmacy. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is the college of choice for Sarah to pursue a degree in pre-dentistry. Students are selected due to past academic performance and future potential, leadership, work experience, statement of career and educational aspirations and goals, unusual personal or family circumstances, and an outside appraisal. The State Bank of Lizton's Board of Directors and officers established this scholarship for students graduating from Lebanon High School, Western Boone Jr. Sr. High School, and Zionsville Community High School.

Howard & Lisa Hull Stay-in-School Scholarship

Kyle Rodgers, son of Kerry and Carolyn Rodgers, is the recipient of the Stay-In-School Scholarship. Purdue University is the college of choice for Kyle where he will major in electrical engineering technologies. This scholarship is awarded to a Zionsville Community High School senior who has attended ZCHS for a minimum of two school years, who plans to pursue an altruistic career by seeking an initial bachelor's degree. Because so many scholarships are for only one year, and because all begin with the freshman year, this scholarship is unique; while it is awarded to a senior, it will not be received until the student is enrolled in his or her second year of college. Dr. Howard Hull, Jr., and his wife Lisa established this scholarship.

Marjorie Stonehill-English, Journalism, Creative Arts Scholarship

Chris Shaw is the recipient of the Marjorie Stonehill-English, Journalism, and Creative Arts Scholarship. He is the son of Rick and Lynn Shaw. Chris will be attending Indiana University to study English and economics and pursue his dream to be a novelist. Marjorie established this scholarship for students who want to pursue careers in the fields of English, Journalism or the Creative Arts. A life-long resident of Zionsville, Mrs. Stonehill was able to achieve her own college experience through the help of scholarships and wants to assist other Boone County students in a similar manner.

Robert Stonehill Pre-Medical Scholarship

Daniel Pierce, son of Danny and Lisa Pierce, received this scholarship established by the late Dr. Robert Stonehill. He has chosen to attend Indiana University to study radiation oncology. Dr. Stonehill created this scholarship for students who are pursuing careers in medicine. He, like his wife Marjorie, was able to pursue his educational goals and become professionally successful through the scholarships he received, and he wants to help young people achieve similar success. This scholarship is unique as it is awarded your senior year of high school but not received until your second year of college.

Charlotte Carr Tyre Scholarship

Jonathan "JD" Hoffman, son of Brian and Vicki Hoffman, is the recipient of this scholarship. He will attend Purdue to pursue a career in agriculture. The recipient of this award must be attending Purdue University and be enrolled in their college of agriculture. In addition, the winner must been an active 4-H member, has need, and has demonstrated leadership skills through involvement in extracurricular activities. In 2007, Jonathan achieved his ten year membership in 4-H. The scholarship was established by Charlotte Tyre who was a life time resident of Boone County, a 10 year 4-H member and a very dedicated community volunteer for many organizations.

Joseph K. Tyre & Charlotte Carr Tyre Scholarship

Graham Youngs, son of Tim and Cathy Youngs is the recipient of this scholarship. Wabash College is his school of choice where he plans to major in history and pre-law studies. To receive this scholarship, the student must be planning to enroll in Wabash College in Crawfordsville, have need, and has valued community service. Joseph & Charlotte Tyre, long time residents of Boone County, established this scholarship. Joe graduated from Lebanon High School and Wabash College. In addition, he was a history and social studies teacher and owned a very successful insurance company. Both Charlotte and Joe were very active volunteers within their community.

Harold Eugene Wagner Wrestling Scholarship

Tyler Kreipke, son of Don and Chris Kreipke, is the recipient of this scholarship. He plans on attending Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and pursue a biomedical engineering degree. This scholarship is given to a student who was a four year participant in a wrestling program with a minimum of three years in the ZCHS program. In addition, the recipient must earn a letter in wrestling 2 of his 4 years in high school. The student chosen must have participated in the Zionsville wrestling program and is likely to succeed at college or at a vocational school.

Washburn Scholarship

Bryce Burgess, son of Rob and Rhonda Burgess, is the 2007 recipient of this scholarship. He is a graduate of McCutcheon High School and will be attending Butler University to pursue a degree in physical therapy. This scholarship is for a Tippecanoe County resident and is not available every year. To be eligible for the Washburn Scholarship a student must be attending an Indiana college to study agriculture, home economics or pre-medicine. The late Mabel and Eugene Higgins began this scholarship in memory of her parents, William S. and Emma Washburn.

Western Boone Education Foundation: Ralph F. & Katherine L. Beam Family Scholarship

Daniel Pierce, son of Danny and Lisa Pierce, was the recipient of this scholarship. He will be attending Indiana University to study radiation oncology. Mr. & Mrs. Beam, long time residents of Jamestown established this renewable scholarship with the Western Boone Education Foundation, a component fund of the Community Foundation of Boone County to provide financial assistance toward college expenses of a Western Boone graduate.

Western Boone Education Foundation: Ron Bush Family Scholarship

David Emmert, son of Billy and Shessy Emmert, was the recipient of this scholarship available only to Western Boone graduates. Ivy Tech of Lafayette is his school of choice and he plans to pursue a degree in agribusiness. To be chosen as a recipient, you must have been a 4-H member in Boone County. In 2006, David achieved his ten-year 4-H member status. The Bushes established this scholarship in memory of their son, James Ronald Bush, a local area farmer and a 1970 graduate of Granville Wells. This scholarship was established with the Western Boone Education Foundation, a component of the Community Foundation of Boone County.

Western Boone Education Foundation: Earl Hoock Scholarship

Misty Day, daughter of Jeffery Day, received this award. She plans to study at IUPUI towards a degree in forensic science. Earl Hoock was a long time Physics and Mathematics teacher at Thorntown and Western Boone High Schools and also drove a school bus for many years. It is the family's goal to provide financial assistance to a deserving Western Boone senior who plans to further their education in the areas of science, mathematics or engineering. This scholarship was established with the Western Boone Education Foundation, a component of the Community Foundation of Boone County.

Western Boone Education Foundation: Kent Poole Athletic Scholarship

Mark "Bobby" Knox, son of Mark and Sandy Knox, received this scholarship. He will attend the Purdue University to study agriculture. This scholarship was established in memory of Kent Poole, a 1982 graduate of Western Boone Jr.Sr. High School by his family. While Kent attended Western Boone, he was involved in tennis, basketball and baseball and was named Western Boone's Senior Athlete. This scholarship was established with the Western Boone Education Foundation, a component of the Community Foundation of Boone County.

Western Boone Education Foundation: Roscoe D. & J. Charlene Stewart

Allison Bramblett, daughter of daughter of David and Carol Bramblett, won this scholarship. Tri-State University is her college of choice where she will pursue an accounting degree. Roscoe and Charlene Stewarts were long time residents of Thorntown. To be a recipient of their scholarship, a student must have maintained at least a "C" average in school and have attended Thorntown Elementary School. This scholarship was established with the Western Boone Education Foundation, a component of the Community Foundation of Boone County.

Western Boone-Bobby Hysong Memorial Scholarship

David Emmert, son of Billy and Shessy Emmert, is the recipient of this scholarship. David will major in agribusiness at Ivy Tech of Lafayette. The recipient of this award must have experience in FFA and 4-H, have a good attitude and relationship with classmates, and have maintained at least a "C" average with future plans in the agriculture field. The scholarship was established by the green ribbon safety committee and friends and family of Bobby Hysong. Bobby was a 1983 Western Boone graduate who was active in FFA, 4-H, and basketball and was Farmer of the Year in 2000 who lost his life in a tragic accident. Through the sale of green magnetic ribbons and orange bumper stickers with the words of "Be patient, be kind...stay behind", a scholarship was established which will be forever a memory of Bobby given yearly to a Western Boone graduating senior.

Western Boone-Pliny & Mildred Randall Scholarship

Claire Garrity, Emily Kramer, Caleb Michalke, and Daniel Pierce are the 2007 recipients. Claire, daughter of Dan and Sharon Garrity, will be attending the University of Southern Indiana to study accounting. Emily, daughter of Theresa and Phil Kramer, plans to study Spanish education at Taylor University. Purdue University is the school of choice for Caleb, son of Jim and Heather Michalke, where he will major in animal science. Daniel, son of Danny and Lisa Pierce, will major in radiation oncology at Indiana University. Students must be attending Western Boone High School and be in good standing with documented academic successes. Mildred and Pliny Randall, who farmed in northern Boone County and lived near Thorntown, established this scholarship. Upon their death, they directed that a general scholarship fund be established for students at four area high schools. The Community Foundation of Boone County administers the scholarship for students attending Western Boone High School.

Allen F. Wharry Memorial Scholarship

To qualify for this award, the recipient must be either a current resident of Boone County or a graduate of a Boone County high school who has completed at least one year of law school at IU School of Law in Indianapolis. Judge Wharry was a graduate of Zionsville Community High School, Wabash College, IU, and the Indiana University of Law in Indianapolis. He was an attorney in Boone County for 30 years including serving in positions such as Boone County Circuit Court judge, interim judge in Howard Circuit Court, Zionsville Town Court judge, and Boone County Deputy Prosecutor. Friends and family of Judge Wharry established this scholarship.

Bob & Sue Wise Living Memorial Music Scholarship

Nicholas Stewart, son of Ron and Beth Stewart, is the recipient of this scholarship. He will be attending the University of Indianapolis and plans to major in music education. This scholarship is awarded to a Speedway High School student who has been a member of the SHS music program for at least two years and has exhibited qualities of scholarship, leadership, hard work and responsibility in pursuing and developing musicianship. The friends and family of Bob Wise established this scholarship. He was a band and choral director of Speedway High School for 33 years and dedicated his life to mentoring youth through his love of music, people and God.

Carl H. Witt Scholarship

Kristin Shrack, Travis King, Mark "Bobby" Knox are the 2007 recipients of this county wide scholarship. Kristin, daughter of Mark and Kimberly Shrack, is a graduate of Zionsville Community High School and will pursue a degree at Purdue. Travis, son of Mike and Karol King, a Lebanon High School graduate, is majoring in business at Indiana University. Bobby, son of Mark and Sandy Knox, graduated from Western Boone and will be studying agriculture at Purdue. Carl Witt, a life long resident of Boone County, worked on a family farm for twenty years, and was a school board member, established this scholarship.

Zionsville Athletic Booster Club Scholarship

Dayna Anderson and Matt Ostendorf are the recipients of the Zionsville Athletic Booster Club scholarships. Dayna, daughter of Mark and Judy Anderson, will attend Arizona State University to pursue a degree in business. Matt, son of Greg and Janet Ostendorf, will also study business but at the University of Texas. Both recipients excelled in sports in high school; Dayna in cross country and track and field and Matt in football, golf and track. The Zionsville Booster Club established this scholarship for one girl and one boy from Zionsville Community High School who are actively involved in school athletics.

Zionsville Optimist Club Scholarship: 4 Year Degree

Monica DeProspero, daughter of Michael and Christina DeProspero, was one of the recipients of the Zionsville Optimist Club scholarships. She will attend Purdue University to study pharmacy. The Zionsville Optimist Club established this scholarship to be awarded to a student who best exhibits character, leadership, and motivation, as well as having financial need and will be pursuing a four year degree.

Zionsville Optimist Club Scholarship: 2 Year Degree

Courtney Clayton, daughter of Jeff and Kara Clayton, was the other recipient of this years' scholarship. Ivy Tech Community College is the school of choice for Courtney, where she will pursue a general studies degree. In the spring of 2003, a second scholarship became available through the Zionsville Optimist Club for a Zionsville senior who plans to obtain an associate degree or a vocational technical certificate.

Miss Indiana Scholarship program brings national visibility to Boone County

In January of 2005, the Community Foundation of Boone County entered into a partnership with the Miss Indiana Scholarship Pageant organization to provide scholarships and awards to the contestants of the Miss Indiana Scholarship Pageant and Miss Indiana Outstanding Teen Pageant. These pageants were held in Boone County at the Zionsville Community High School Performing Arts Center in June, 2007. Over $25,000 will be awarded in scholarships to 27 women for Miss Indiana. $2,150 will be given in scholarships to 21 contestants for Miss Indiana Outstanding Teen. Miss Indiana will compete to become the Miss America 2007. Miss Indiana's Outstanding Teen, Morgan Jackson, was named to the Top Ten at Miss America's Outstanding Teen in August.
