Boone County Students Awarded $352,320 in ScholarshipsCommunity Foundation of Boone County |

The Community Foundation of Boone County awarded forty-three students with scholarships or gift certificates. Of these scholarships three Lilly Endowment Community Scholarships were given. For the first time since the scholarshipšs inception, the Foundation has a recipient from Sheridan High School. On May 23, Sirenna Piercy was awarded the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship. Sally Waitt presented this award to her. Sirenna will receive full tuition and fees for four years of college and an annual book stipend. She plans to attend Hanover College, which has an estimated cost for tuition and fees of $49,480 for the four-year degree. A perpetual plaque was given to the high school honoring her.Lebanon High School held their awards night also on May 23. This year The Foundation gave twelve scholarships and one gift certificate. The awards totaled $188,710.
Lee Anne McKelvey and Elizabeth Powell were two of the three of the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship recipients. Judy Cunningham of Lebanon presented both girls with this award. The estimated value for each of these scholarships is $85,680, which provides full-tuition for four years and an annual book stipend. They will both be attending DePauw University. Lee Anne will study chemistry or economics. Elizabeth has been accepted into the management honors program. In addition, their names were added to the perpetual plaque at the school, which displays all of the names of the recipients from Lebanon High School who have won this prestigious award. Natalie Hendricks was an additional finalist for the Lilly scholarship. She will receive a $350 gift certificate to purchase supplies for college.
Ethan Corser is Lebanon High School's Buren Fund Scholarship recipient. He will be attending Ivy Tech State College to study welding. Ron Lind presented this $1,000 a year renewable for four years scholarship. The Carl Witt Trust Scholarship recipient from Lebanon was Sitarani Palomar. Carl Witt who was a life long resident of the county, a school board member and a self-made man who's business savvy led to his generous scholarship donation established this scholarship. Sitarani received $2,000 a year for four years. He plans to pursue a career in communications and advertising at Pennsylvania State University.
Boone County Ambassador's IPALCO Scholarship was awarded to Andrew Wilhoite and Stacy Esslinger. They will each receive a $250.00 scholarship to be used for their discretionary use for college expenses.
Holly McCormack received the Psi Iota Xi-Omega Chapter Malpas Scholarship. She will receive $500 a year renewable for four years. This scholarship is awarded to a girl who ranks in the top 50% of her class. Preference is given to a Lebanon High School student who plans to major in art, literature, music, or speech & hearing. Natalie Hendricks, Abby Brockman, and Christopher McAttee are the three recipients of the Crossmann Communities Scholarship. Each student received $500. This scholarship was established with funds from the home building business of Crossmann Communities. The builder pledged $100 for scholarships for every house sold within a certain time period.
Two new scholarships were available for Lebanon High School graduates. William Sullivan will receive $500 towards his college education at Tri-State University to study criminal justice. He received the David Spear Memorial Scholarship: Courage to Change. Katrina Yeadon was the first recipient of the David Spear Memorial Scholarship: Courage to Care. She also received $500 to pursue a medical imaging technology degree at IU-PU Indianapolis. The friends and family in memory of David Spear who lost his life in a tragic accident in 2000 established these two scholarships. The recipients have made a lifestyle change, which helped them or others reach their full potential on the football field, in the classroom, and in the community.
The Community Foundation of Boone County awarded $36,740 to students who attend Western Boone on May 9. That evening eleven scholarships and four gift certificates were given away.
Debbie Smith of Thorntown presented Justin Mohler with a couple awards. He received the Carl Witt Trust Scholarship. He is one of the three recipients chosen from the Boone County schools. Justin will receive $2,000 a year for four years.
Justin Mohler received the Buren Fund Scholarship. He will receive $1,000 each year for four years. This scholarship was started with a bequest in 1914 of William Higgins. There is one recipient from each of the three Boone County high schools. He wanted to provide support "in aiding worthy young men in procuring such college education either technical or literary." He will be going to Purdue University to study agricultural economics. The Boone County Agriculture Scholarship was awarded to Jessica Miller. George and Nancy Morton established this award for students who are interested in pursuing careers in agriculture or related fields. Jessica received $2,000 which she will use to study agricultural economics at Texas A & M.
$340 was given to Casey Neese as the recipient of the Darrell A. Portell 4-H Memorial Scholarship. To be chosen as the recipient of this scholarship you must have been actively involved in 4-H for the last three years of your eligibility. Barbara Portell established this scholarship in memory of her husband.
Jessica Miller, Justin Mohler, Lindsay Terhune, and Alicia Johnson were finalists for the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship. They each received a gift certificate in the amount of $350 for college supplies.
Karen James presented the Pliny and Mildred Randall Scholarships to three students. Marissa Johnson, Jessica Miller and Robbi Harless received $1,000 a year for four years. Recipients were selected from a strong field of applicants in recognition of academic and civic achievements. The Randall scholarship was established by bequest of Mildred Randall in 1984.
The Community Foundation of Boone County administers the Boone County Ambassador's IPALCO Scholarship. This year two Western Boone students were the recipients of $250. They were Garrett Kelly and Justin Mohler. The funds were given to them for their discretionary for college expenses. To be chosen as a recipient, you must be active in Boone County 4-H program for the past three years, possess good leadership skills and be involved in your community.
Two new scholarships were available this year to Western Boone students. Lindsay Terhune was the first recipient of the Ralph F. & Katherine L. Beam Family Scholarship with an award of $2,000 renewable for four years. Mr. & Mrs. Beam established this renewable scholarship to provide financial assistance toward college expenses of a Western Boone graduate. Wes Hill received $500 from the Ron Bush Family Scholarship. The Bushes established this scholarship in memory of their son, James Ronald Bush, a local area farmer and a 1970 graduate of Granville Wells.
Zionsville Community High School held their awards night on May 24. Twenty-six scholarships and three gift certificates were given to students. $44,390 was the total amount awarded by the Community Foundation of Boone County.
The first recipient of the Dorothy Roby Memorial Scholarship is Erin McGlocklin. She will receive $500 and will be attending Indiana University to pursue her degree in elementary education. Friends and former students of Ms. Roby established this scholarship in her memory. She was a long time teacher who made a difference in the lives of many students in the Zionsville Community School system.
Erin was also the recipient of the Florence Gruver Memorial Scholarship for Boone County. Robert V. Copeland established this scholarship in memory of his friend, Florence Gruver, who died in 1994, and who had been a teacher and a fine and true lady. McGlocklin will receive $1,500 a year for four years.
Another new scholarship offered to Zionsville graduating seniors was the Eugene Wagner Wrestling Scholarship. This award was for $600 and was given to the student who participated in the Zionsville Community High School wrestling program. Aaron Davis is this years recipient.
The Thomas E. Gruhl Scholarship is awarded to two students this year. Amanda Read will receive $1,850. Her plans are to study secondary education in mathematics and attend Milligan College. Chad Cravens also received this scholarship. He receives $500 to pursue an electrical engineering degree at Purdue University. The Board of Directors of Mid State Bank in honor of the retirement of bank president, Tom Gruhl established this scholarship.
Cassandra Berger was the recipient of the Marjorie Stonehill English, Journalism, Creative Arts Scholarship. Marjorie was able to achieve her own college experience through the help of scholarships and she wanted to assist other Boone County students in a similar manner. Through this scholarship, Cassandra will receive $1,000 to study English.
The Edward K. Castetter Memorial Award was awarded to Martha Elmore. This $330 award was established in memory of Castetter who, after retiring from Proctor & Gamble in Cincinnati, returned home to play an active leadership role in Boone County.
Lisa Radivan, Ashly Cumberworth, and Emily Olberding were three of the eleven finalists for the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship. Each student received a $350 gift certificate to purchase books and supplies for college.
Ashly Cumberworth was the recipient of two scholarships: Thomas G. Slama Scholarship and the Pratt Family Fund Scholarship. Dr. Thomas G. Slama, a resident of Zionsville, established this fund. He wanted to do something in acknowledgement of what he and his children had received from the community, and to encourage medical studies. This $1,000 scholarship renewable for four years was given to Ashly who plans to pursue a degree in medical science. She hopes some day to be an orthopedic surgeon.
Bing and Suzi Pratt established the Pratt Family Fund Scholarship in honor of their daughters. It is to be awarded to a female graduating senior of Zionsville Community High School who has leadership and initiative in scholastics and athletics. Ashly plans to attend either the University of Notre Dame or Indiana University and will receive $1,000 towards her education.
Emily Olberding is the recipient of the Robert Stonehill Pre-Medical Scholarship. She is awarded the $1,000 scholarship in her senior year but will not receive the funds until her sophomore year in college. Dr. Stonehill was able to pursue his educational goals and become professionally successful through the scholarships he received, and wants to help young people achieve similar success. Emily plans to attend Tulane University and pursue a biology/pre-medicine degree.
Zionsville Optimist Club also awarded Stephanie Lefebvre with a $1,000 scholarship. She plans to study biology and secondary education so she can teach high school biology.
Lisa Radivan was the recipient of the Carl Witt Trust Scholarship. Jim Eggers presented this award for $2,000 renewable for four years. Purdue is Lisašs school of choice to pursue a veterinary technology degree.
The Buren Fund Scholarship recipient for Zionsville High School is Matt Mullis. He plans to attend Rose-Hulman and study computer or biomedical engineering. The award is for $1,000 per year renewable for four years.
Mark Shortz received the Todd Getty Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $1,785. This fund was established by donations from the family and friends of Todd W. Getty who was killed in a car accident August 30, 1992. The scholarship is given to a student who most exemplifies some of the finer characteristics of Getty: sportsmanship, strong work ethic, and positive attitude.
In addition to the Todd Getty Memorial Scholarship, Mark received the Entrepreneur Scholarship Fund in honor of Lloyd & Jane Taylor. Jeff Thomasson who credits Lloyd Taylor with encouraging him to pursue his education and business goals established the Entrepreneur Scholarship. Shortz received $4,050 for this award. He plans to pursue a civil engineering degree at Purdue University. Mark already is an entrepreneur by establishing his own business entitled Mark Shortz, Inc. in which he provides a lawn care and snow removal service.
The Homer & Gwendolen Fix Memorial Scholarships are given to a male and a female student who have participated in the athletic programs of Zionsville Community Middle School and continued such participation through graduation from ZCHS. Sam Fix established this fund in memory of his parents. Aaron Davis and Rachel Carter were the award winners, each receiving $1,000. Arthur & Nancy Hansen Scholarship Award for Science and Mathematics was awarded to Dan Schultz, Aaron Lewis, Ryan Nasserizafar, and Rachel Heneghan. Dan, Senior student, received $400; Aaron, junior $300; Ryan, sophomore $200; and Rachel, freshman $100. They have all excelled or shown a strong interest in science and mathematics.
Martha Elmore was the recipient of two scholarships: Tom Bauman Memorial Scholarship and the Zionsville Community Schools Board of Trustees Scholarship.
She will receive $925 from the Tom Bauman Memorial Scholarship. This award was presented to her in memory of Bauman, a 1981 graduate of Zionsville Community High School, who excelled in all aspects of his life prior to his untimely death on September 29, 1986. This scholarship is given to a student who makes a significant contribution to the athletic program.
The Zionsville Community Schools Board of Trustees Scholarship is for $1,000 which is awarded yearly by the school board to the student who shows appreciation of educational excellence; continuous improvement in academic standing; involvement in the political process; and an impact by the teaching community. Community High School. Martha Elmore received this award and will pursue an occupational therapy degree at Calvin College.
Guy Curry was this year's recipient of the Superintendent's Stay-in-School Scholarship. Dr. Howard Hull established this $1,000 award. It is unique since Guy will not receive it until he is enrolled in his second year of college.
Billy Slama is this years recipient of the Zionsville Booster Club Scholarship. He will receive $1,250 toward his college career. The Zionsville Booster Club annually gives this award to a high school student involved in athletics.
The American Legion Post 79-Jack Clark Scholarship in the amount of $550 was awarded to Cheryl Russell. This scholarship was established with proceeds from the sale of property bequeathed by Jack Clark to Post 79 of the American Legion in Zionsville.
Three awards were given to students who did not graduate from a Boone County school this year. Jodi Fischer received the Washburn Scholarship, which is available only to a Tippecanoe resident graduating from a Tippecanoe County school. She will receive $8,000 per year renewable for four years. Indiana University is her school of choice, which she will study to be a dietician.
Susan Sansom of Brownwood, Texas received $500 for the Jim & Frances Capps Scholarship. Boone County residents John and Charlene Roth in memory of Charlenešs parents established this. Although it is administered by the Community Foundation of Boone County, it is given to qualified students of Brownwood High School, Texas.
Adam Gaha was the first recipient of the Honorable Allen F. Wharry Memorial Scholarship. He is currently enrolled at Indiana University School of Law in Indianapolis and was a former Boone County resident. This scholarship was established by friends and family of Judge Wharry. He will receive $500 towards his education in law school.
The Foundation's scholarship selections are determined by a variety of methods, depending upon the donor's charitable goals. Some funds have their own selection committees; a committee appointed by the Foundation selects others.
